Around 70 Commerz Real employees rolled up their sleeves yesterday to support the Diaconia facilities in the Düsseldorf-Flingern district. During this year’s Social Day, the volunteers contributed to the Diaconia’s goal of improving living and living conditions in the neighbourhood. For this purpose, gardening work took place in the “Garden of the Senses” district garden, donated clothes were sorted, weeds were weeded on areas of the “Essbare Stadt” project and a raised bed was built. The outside area of the Langerstraße evangelical daycare centre was cleaned, six apartments of refugee families and mentally ill people were repainted, and an inner courtyard containing a construction vehicle from the Icklack initiative (homeless women’s housing) was decorated.
“The diligent support has helped us to carry out many important tasks for which time and manpower would otherwise simply be scarce,” says Michael Schmidt, Board Member of Diakonie Düsseldorf. In 2008, Diakonie Düsseldorf built and moved to its campus in Flingern. This consists not only of the administration, but also of many different facilities that serve as a point of contact in the district. In addition to a nursing home and retirement home, there is a specialist ambulance for addicts and a district shop. The district shop has been in operation since 1982 and offers various family counselling and family education services.
